History
Jefferson County took its name from President Thomas Jefferson. In 1858, when gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains, there were fewer than 200 settlers in the area. An influx of nearly 35,000 people arrived two years later, lured by the glitter of gold. Once an agricultural and mining area, Jefferson County is now the largest county in Colorado with a population estimated at 535,000.

A geological wonder, this county is home to some of the most magnificent scenery in the country: 774 square miles of rolling grasslands, craggy rock formations, and rugged mountains with tumbling mountain streams, lofty pines, granite, pink quartz and feldspar crystals. The county is highly industrialized, clustering high technology, geo-technology, materials, mining and energy into its economic strength. The U.S. government is the largest employer, operating the Mammoth Denver Federal Center and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory here.
